In 2012, I had an opportunity to go up to Central Michigan University for the first of the Summer Projects we perform on an annual basis. At the time, I was an estimating assistant and did not have much field experience. These projects required a dedicated Estimator/PE that I fit the description for. There were about 30 projects that needed to be estimated, reviewed, and if approved, bid and built in a short amount of time. The other projects were between phases of the Anspach Hall project, and they had been working together for months by the time I came in. Our office was setup in the basement of the building in a room that was roughly 400 square feet so, we were packed in tight. This was different than anything I had experienced before and was outside of my comfort zone, but that is all we had. We had a lot of work to do so we had to make it work.
Looking back, I can honestly say this was one of the best experiences I have ever had both personally and professionally. Like I mentioned, it was completely outside of my comfort zone and unlike anything I had experienced before. With all of us in that small space, it forced interaction and collaboration. For me personally, it allowed me to interact and socialize sooner than if we all would have had our own offices. It also exposed me to the operations aspect of the company. We ended up doing roughly 15 projects that summer, so the experience we gained from the bidding and buying out process to the actual construction and closeout was great. I think the best and most valuable parts of the experience were the new relationships and knowledge I gained from the team. They are still my go-to group when I have questions or need advice on something. It was an incredible team to work with. I would not have been able to build those same relationships with the same people had it not been for the summer jobs.
