Chairman of the Board
John is Chairman of the Board of Clark Construction Company and a respected leader in the construction industry. He has 45 years experience in the construction industry. The eldest son of Leon and Frances Clark’s eleven children, John began his career in construction as a young man working summers and during school breaks for his father’s company. His first projects were completed in the industrial/manufacturing plants of General Motors’ Lansing facilities. Since then he has completed construction projects for commercial, industrial, and institutional customers throughout Michigan. John is well respected among owners such as Michigan State University, University of Michigan, State of Michigan, General Motors, Kellogg Company, Clinton County, Ingham County, among others.
John has been instrumental in growing the company to a national perennial “Top 400 Contractor” in Engineering News Record’s (ENR) annual ranking. John shares the same philosophy on which his father, Leon, founded the company – providing exceptional customer service to all project owners. John is first and foremost an advocate for the customer – prompting the creation of the John M. Clark Service Award, presented annually to the Clark employee who demonstrates an exceptional work ethic, service, and dedication on behalf of the company and its customers.
John’s skill as a mentor and detailed knowledge of the construction industry make him a tremendous asset and well respected leader in the company, as well as the community. He developed a proprietary scheduling manual, based on trade contractor hours, that is the core document used by Clark Construction Company in fulfilling the company’s obligation to meeting each owner’s scheduled completion date.
In his spare time, John has devoted his time to various community efforts including restoring the popular Woldumar Nature Center, renovations to the historic Grand Ledge Opera House, Watertown Township Fire Station and the YMCA. He has served as Chair of the Looking Glass Regional Fire Authority Board since 2004. John and his wife, Mary, have four children and seven grandchildren and they enjoy traveling and cross country skiing in their leisure time.
