75 Stories: Chuck Clark
2021 marks the 75th Anniversary for Clark Construction Company. To celebrate, we’re using our employee’s voices to explain the impact Clark has made to ourselves, fellow teammates, communities, and clients. This is Chuck’s story.
75 Years…where did they go?
I’ve thought for a long time whether or not to share my thoughts on the company’s 75 years. Whether or not, in this case, it was better to just remain silent and “listen” but finally it made more sense to me to put my two cents.
I’ve been struck by your stories, whether they be authored by a ”newcomer” or an “old timer” or someone in between there seems to be a consistent theme to each of these heartfelt tales…family. I am sure that this theme would have touched my father, too. It’s a great feeling to be a part of a family.
The company has always been a part of my life, which also began 75 years ago! I remember listening to my dad at the dinner table talking about engineers from Fisher Body and Oldsmobile and places like the “Jet Plant” and “The Forge Plant”. Those folks and places seemed larger than life to me and early on decided that I wanted to be a part of that. Those stories impacted me so much that it still puzzles me today that only John and I among the 11 kids in our family made careers here.
I could not have known what was in store for Clark Construction Company. From a tiny second floor office in Grand Ledge and serving that town and then General Motors, and gradually a larger geography and different markets. Growing from gas station renovations and sidewalk projects, and then years later to major Bioscience Research Facilities at world famous research Universities, world class hotels, a major player in school construction across the state, and so much more! You all know today’s story and can imagine better than I what might be coming next!
The company has survived through four leaders and three generations and is stronger now than ever. You have built a more diverse work force that could not have been seen 75 years ago, bright, resourceful energetic people everywhere you look! I know my father had not seen what we’ve become in his vision of the company. As he said to me, the last time that I saw him, 32 years ago, he, speaking of the company, “I never saw this, I never saw it coming; I was just trying to put shoes on kids’ feet and feed my family.” Back to that poignant word that I hear in each of your stories… family… he couldn’t have dreamed of a sweeter more satisfying legacy! I am sure he would want to thank each of you as do I so, on behalf of my brother, son and nephews, thank you for your wonderful stories; it feels great to be a part of your family!
