My first paycheck from Clark was in 1959. After a hitch in the Armed Forces and going to Michigan State University—while working summers and weekends—I became a full-time employee in 1967. I have seen and been a part of an evolution from a general contractor that did projects within a 50-mile radius from Lansing, working primarily for the automotive industry. Then to today as a construction manager that works statewide across Michigan and out-of-state on a variety of projects, from infrastructure to higher education.
We have had many good years as a firm with an occasional difficult period, but through all of this time my greatest satisfaction has been our Clark people. Their ability to function as a team, adapt to change, and to collaborate with owners and design professionals to complete some great projects, and make us one of the top 200 contractors in the United States, is a massive endeavor. A huge amount of credit should be given to our Dad, Leon Clark, who balanced the needs of a family of eleven with the help of our mother, Frances, to build a business that he would be proud of today.
