75 Stories: Jon Beierwaltes, Project Engineer
2021 marks the 75th Anniversary for Clark Construction Company. To celebrate, we’re using our employee’s voices to explain the impact Clark has made to ourselves, fellow teammates, communities, and clients. This is Jon’s story.
Upon being hired as an intern at Clark, I was fortunate to be placed on the Michigan State University Grand Rapids Research Center project. I can remember going on a site walk with my project manager on the first day where he asked what I thought about the building. I told him my head was spinning just trying to comprehend everything that was happening, and he replied, “Good, we only have 6 more floors to go!” The experience I had with that team that summer was far beyond anything I would have expected for being an intern. Following my internship, Clark hired me on as a Project Engineer where I have worked on a variety of different types of projects. If there is anything I can take out of my experience with Clark, it is the amount of effort that my coworkers put in to help me succeed. We are all busy and have our own responsibilities on each project, but I have always been able to reach out to someone I am working with for help and have never been denied the assistance I needed.
Family always comes before anything and that is one value that is a top priority with Clark that really sticks out to me. When my daughter was born, I was neck deep in work for the pre-construction/bidding portion of the CMU summer projects. On top of her own work, Jacki Hilgendorf filled in for me for a week so I would be able to spend time with my family without falling behind. When I got back everything was complete and she got me setup for the next chain of events to make my life easier. It is reassuring knowing that there is always someone there to help when you are in a tight situation. With that being said, I am not just another employee working for Clark. I could reach out Sam Clark or any one of the Clark executives at any given time to talk, whether it’s concerns about my project or what I had for dinner last night knowing that they would take some time to listen and have a good conversation.
I am very thankful for the experience I have been given thus far and I am excited for what the future holds as a part of the Clark team.
