Clark is Making Progress at McLaren Northern Michigan Cheboygan Campus

Clark is currently working on a second-floor renovation to create the Justin A. Borra Behavioral Health Center on the McLaren Northern Michigan Cheboygan campus. This single-phase, 11,000 square foot project features 16 inpatient adult psychiatric beds. The original facility was built in the 1970’s. The project started in February 2022 and involves working almost entirely above an active emergency department and the imaging department, as well as waiting rooms for both services, and has recently reached the midpoint of the project. Working closely with the SmithGroup design team, Kramer Management Group, and McLaren Northern Michigan, Clark has been closely coordinating with state and local Authorities Having Jurisdictions (AHJ’s) to keep this complex project moving forward.  Currently, all framing is completed, drywall is in process, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are underway as scheduled.

The need for this project and its services to the community is great.  According to recent data, the entire state of Michigan has just over 3,000 licensed psychiatric inpatient beds – yet only 35 of those beds are in the 22 counties that McLaren Northern Michigan serves. This one of the many reasons this project received a $3 million State of Michigan Enhancement Grant along with other generous donations making up another $4.3 million of the project cost. The Health Center will host the Pulte Family Foundation Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit and the McDonald Partial Hospitalization Program, offering help and healing to individuals experiencing mental health related disorders, including: depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, thought disorders such as schizophrenia and/or substance abuse issues closer to home. Without this facility, patients in Northern Michigan are often forced to transfer to hospitals hundred of miles away to receive the care they need.

“McLaren Northern Michigan is excited to bring this much needed service to our area.  Yearly, we see almost 1,000 individuals in our Emergency Departments and many times we were forced to send them long distances to receive care because of the lack of in-patient beds.  This is such a great opportunity to revitalize the Cheboygan Campus and our communities.  Through our generous donors and multiple grants, we can help many people within our communities.” states Laura Daniel RN, Interim CNO and Executive Lead for the Behavioral Health Programs.

To minimize the impact to the active ER and Imaging services on the first floor, much of the initial work was completed off-shift to accommodate the needs of the staff and patients below. Despite the challenges of daily shifting patient and clinical priorities, our trade partners have provided great value and expertise by adapting daily to the needs of the moment. Andy J. Egan Co., Thunder Bay Electric, Clark Contracting Services, John E. Green, and L & L Contracting stood out for their attention to detail in communicating with the McLaren staff in an ever-changing environment.

McLaren Northern Michigan is a 202-bed regional hospital located in Petoskey, Michigan serving residents in 22 counties across northern Lower Michigan and the eastern part of the Upper Peninsula. More than 230 physicians represent nearly all medical and surgical specialties, enabling full-service care with an emphasis on cardiology, cancer, orthopedics, and neurosciences. McLaren Northern Michigan has a network of primary care providers and specialty care clinics throughout the region, and an outpatient surgery center in Cheboygan where the Justin A. Borra Behavioral Health Center will reside.
