Gun Lake Casino is embarking on an extraordinary $300 million expansion project, poised to revolutionize the gaming and hospitality experience. The resort promises to redefine the landscape of entertainment and tourism in the West Michigan region. Let’s delve into the marvels of the Hotel and the Wawyé Oasis, the economic impact, project challenges, and the successful management that has kept the project on schedule and within budget.
At the heart of Gun Lake Casino’s grand expansion lies the breathtaking Wawyé Oasis, a striking architectural marvel encased within a 32,000 square-foot glass dome. Gun Lake Casino’s CEO, Sal Semola, envisions this venue will showcase palm trees and tropical flora at a year-round temperature of 80 degrees. The space is designed with flexibility in mind, by being a balanced design of an indoor resort pool environment as well as a high-energy entertainment venue for a night club or concert atmosphere.
Natural daylight will illuminate the space during the day featuring three separate pools: the VIP pool, the 21+ pool with a swim up bar, and the family pool. Each pool and pool deck are designed as separate living spaces to create intimate, private, yet social settings inside this oasis. Each pool will have pool-side loungers, private cabanas, lush landscaping complete with tall palm trees, tropical flora and planting.
The Wawyé Oasis provides a full assortment of resort amenities year-round with this indoor pool environment with its full-service bars, concessions, a production kitchen, and outdoor patio.
During the evening, the Wawyé Oasis transforms into a nightclub and/or concert environment that can house up to 2,400 guests. It can also easily accommodate banquet seating for over 300 guests.
The hotel component of Gun Lake Casino’s grand expansion required the implementation of caissons. These sturdy cylindrical structures, each measuring up to an impressive eight (8) feet in diameter, serve as the foundation for the soaring 15-story hotel building and the Wawyé Oasis. A total of 263 caissons were strategically drilled up to 180 feet deep to provide the necessary support and stability for this architectural wonder.
Constructing these colossal caissons posed significant challenges, but the project team rose to the occasion with innovative solutions. Advanced drilling techniques and state-of-the-art machinery were employed to excavate the earth and precisely position each caisson. The meticulous engineering and coordination ensure that the hotel’s foundation will be able to withstand the test of time, securely holding the weight of the towering structure above. With this solid foundation in place, Gun Lake Casino’s hotel and atrium has begun to soar towards the sky, a symbol of the vision and perseverance driving this exceptional expansion.
Gun Lake Casino’s expansion project has brought together a massive workforce, showcasing the true power of collaboration. With an average of 70 tradespeople onsite in the month of October, the number peaks at an impressive 280 during crucial construction phases. The dedicated workforce comprises skilled professionals from various trades, contributing their expertise to make this grand vision a reality. Their commitment and craftsmanship bring life to the resort, ensuring that every detail is executed with precision.
Beyond its opulence and entertainment offerings, the Gun Lake Casino expansion is set to create a substantial economic impact on the region. At an estimated $650 million, the resort aims to draw tourists from major cities such as Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago, promoting local businesses and job growth. With over 15,000 jobs created, both on and off-site, the project serves as a catalyst for economic prosperity, strengthening the Grand Rapids and Southwest Michigan area.
Managing a project of this scale is no small feat, yet Gun Lake Casino’s team has excelled in keeping the expansion on schedule and within budget. Effective project management and meticulous planning have ensured that each phase progresses seamlessly. The resort’s commitment to quality and efficiency has led to successful execution, making it a shining example of responsible development.
Under the visionary leadership of CEO, Sal Semola, the $300 million expansion project is turning dreams into reality. From the marvels of the Wawyé Oasis to the challenges overcome with innovative solutions, the resort stands as a testament to human ingenuity. The bustling workforce and its economic impact highlight the project’s significance beyond entertainment, while effective management keeps the endeavor on course. With the project making significant progress, anticipation builds for the remarkable “staycation” experience that awaits visitors, setting a new standard in entertainment and hospitality.
