The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) awarded Clark Construction Company a $65 million-dollar lump sum contract to replace existing 4800V medium voltage electrical system and construct various civil site, architectural, structural, building mechanical, plumbing, electrical and control system improvements at the Springwells Water Treatment Plant.
The Plant is located in the city of Dearborn and is considered to be the largest freshwater treatment facility in North America, with a firm capacity to treat 540-million gallons of water per day. The Plant has been providing uninterrupted wholesale potable water since 1931 in a service area encompassing 981 square miles, and serving eight Michigan counties in southeast Michigan. This project award is the second for Clark Construction at the Springwells Water Treatment Plant, and comes right on the heel of the just completed $23 million-dollar, 3½-year treatment process improvement contract.
Project execution presents coordination needs with GLWA operational mandates to maintain system output during high demands over the 58-month project construction period, and during the replacement of existing MV feeders to existing pump motors and while coordinating uninterruptible power supplies from DTE Energy.
