Vice President of Human Resources

Why do you like being in construction industry?

It is great to be part of something that has a lasting visible finished product. I love driving around and passing projects that I have worked on in the past. I think about the soils and foundation placement, the reinforcement of the concrete, the placement of structural steel and roof units, the electrical and plumbing systems behind the walls, the ventilation systems and maintenance access points, the effort that went into the millwork and interior finishes of the building, the schedule and budget challenges of bringing it all together. Others see such a small portion of the finished space in commercial buildings. I appreciate having been part of the “behind the scenes” tour prior to occupancy. And maybe I just like to have my truck tires and boots in the dirt also.

Why are women successful leaders in this industry?

I believe that women are successful leaders in our industry because of their ability to communicate and negotiate. We often have a broader perspective of situations due to our many responsibilities at work and also outside of work. We are constantly overcoming challenges, juggling schedules and budgets, negotiating outcomes with various stakeholders, and keeping the big picture in mind. This allows us to see a broader set of solutions from multiple perspectives, rather than just an “either, or” option. Often we also have a higher level of EQ (Emotional Intelligence) skills that are demonstrated by top leaders in all industries.

Advice that you have for women entering the A/E/C.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Embrace being a beginner and always look for opportunities to learn and grow. Make a point to learn from every trade worker that you encounter; they are the most knowledgeable in their professions. Always understand that there can be better solutions and better emerging technology. Continue to evolve with these changes. Maintain a “lifelong learner” attitude at every point of your career.
